Future of Freshwater Ecosystems in a 1.5°C Warmer World

چکیده

Freshwater ecosystems are highly vulnerable to global warming because 1) their chief drivers, water quality and flow regimes, sensitive atmospheric warming, 2) they already extremely threatened by a wide range of interacting anthropogenic pressures. Even relatively modest 1.5°C poses considerable threat freshwater the many critical services these provide people. Shifts in composition function widely anticipated with adverse consequences for ecosystem services, including those underpinning food security. While extent severity effects is likely be significantly reduced if limited 1.5°C, concerted efforts implement recognised priorities policy management required mitigate unavoidable impacts reduce likelihood perverse outcomes climate mitigation adaptation other sectors—all which rely on fresh supply. provision water, must therefore considered first foremost when developing implementing any action.

The global spread of malaria in a future, warmer world.

The frequent warnings that global climate change will allow falciparum malaria to spread into northern latitudes, including Europe and large parts of the United States, are based on biological transmission models driven principally by temperature. These models were assessed for their value in predicting present, and therefore future, malaria distribution. In an alternative statistical approach,...

Hybridization in a warmer world

Climate change is profoundly affecting the evolutionary trajectory of individual species and ecological communities, in part through the creation of novel species assemblages. How climate change will influence competitive interactions has been an active area of research. Far less attention, however, has been given to altered reproductive interactions. Yet, reproductive interactions between form...

Warmer paleotemperatures for terrestrial ecosystems.

Floras of predominantly wet-soil environments show a greater than expected proportion of toothed leaves, affecting the outcome of leaf physiognomically based temperature estimates. New analyses of foliar physiognomy of plants growing in predominantly wet soils in modern forests suggest that current methods of inferring paleotemperatures from fossil floras yield underestimates of 2.5-10 degrees ...

Grand Challenge for the Future of Freshwater Ecosystems

We live on a blue planet and, althoughmuch of the water is in the oceans, it can be argued that there is abundant freshwater to sustain human society: some 93,000 km3 is in lakes and rivers alone and much more is stored in groundwater or as ice1. However, freshwater is not distributed uniformly in space or time across the globe, nor often in relation to patterns of human settlement. To compound...

Coastal upwelling in a warmer future

[1] Coastal upwelling helps set the physical context for marine ecosystems, and upwelling zones are among the most productive regions of the global ocean. Unlike earlier models, two state-of-the-art climate models exhibit little change during the next century in the magnitude and seasonality of coastal upwelling, but climate models are still probably not sufficiently developed (for example, the...
